The study of a new class of oral medications called Nexium, known as Prevacid, is just the beginning of how the drug has transformed the treatment of male infertility.
Pfizer Inc. says it will begin selling a generic version of the prescription drug for the first time.
It's called Prevacid, or Prilosec. It was approved by the FDA on May 28 for the treatment of male infertility. But Pfizer's new drug is just one of many drugs developed to treat male infertility.
It works by blocking the production of an enzyme known as the HMG-CoA reductase enzyme, or the "statins," which are found in many human and animal fats.
It may also reduce the amount of sperm produced by the sperm cells. The drug's active ingredient, ranitidine, is used to treat enlarged prostate, a condition in which the prostate gland enlarges, while the testicles are not making enough of this hormone.
But Pfizer has never tested the drug in humans, and a new study has been launched on a site in the United States.
The research, conducted by the University of Washington and the University of California, San Diego, showed that the drug reduced sperm production and improved the quality of semen. But the test results showed that Prevacid didn't change the ability of the male reproductive tract to produce sperm.
Researchers say that the drug works by blocking the production of an enzyme known as the "statins," which are found in many human and animal fats.
The drug was first approved by the FDA in 1998 for the treatment of hypothyroidism, a condition in which the body has trouble absorbing enough of the thyroid hormone, T3, and T4. The drug was developed by the drugmaker and made available to the public in 1999.
It's also been used to treat heart disease.
In addition to the drug's effectiveness, Prevacid has been shown to have side effects in a number of other studies.
A 1999 study found that the drug caused more abnormal heart rhythms in patients who took it, but it did not affect the heart's ability to pump blood.
The study also found that the drug was generally well-tolerated.
"It does, it's a very safe, very safe drug," says Dr. Robert E. Stetz, a professor of reproductive medicine at Northwestern University and an assistant director of the U. S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Center for Reproductive Medicine.
But he also says that the drug is potentially harmful to the developing fetus, which is used in some of the world's most intensive medical care programs.
While Prevacid is still being studied, Stetz said he'd like to see it approved more widely and under new guidelines that would allow other drugs to be approved more widely.
"I would like to see the Food and Drug Administration approving more drugs that are more widely available," he says. "So I want to see if it can be done faster."

This is a work of fiction.SUMMARY
The research that led to the new drug was a small study of only about half of the male population. But the results were amazing.
And that's not all. The study involved almost 3 million men with male infertility, all from North Carolina.
The men taking Prevacid were all of the age range of the women, with the exception of women with PCOS. The results showed that the drug reduced sperm production and improved the quality of semen.
When Prevacid was approved by the FDA in 1998, men with infertility had no problem getting and keeping an erection and a full head of hair.
Active ingredient(s)
Therapeutic indicationsNexium (esomeprazole, 20 mg) is indicated in the treatment of acute severe to moderate gastroesophageal reflux reflux esophagitis (GERD), acute acid reflux esophagitis (AGER), chronic acid reflux esophagitis (CASE) and acute proton dysentery due toHelicobacter pylori. Nexium is anantibiotic, in accordance with thecriteria. Other therapeutic indications include the management of patients with Zollinger-Ellison syndrome andEscherichia coliinfection. Nexium is contraindicated in patients with a known hypersensitivity to esomeprazole or any other proton pump inhibitor (PPI), and in those with a history of peptic ulcer disease. It is also contraindicated in patients taking antacids containing magnesium, calcium, aluminium, bismuth, or calcium. The efficacy of esomeprazole in the treatment of reflux esophagitis has not been established. Esomeprazole is contraindicated in patients receiving concomitant use of antiplatelet therapy or aspirin due toH. pylori Esomeprazole should be used with caution in patients with a history of stomach ulcer or bleeding, and in patients with severe heart failure, and in the presence of serious cardiac or vascular events. Working of medicineNexium (esomeprazole) is an antisecretory, proton pump inhibitor (PPI) and a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that induces the release of acid and inhibits the production of sucrose. The release of acid and the inhibition of the production of sucrose by the cells of the stomach are associated with the inhibition of the gastric acid secretion and with the release of gastric acid into the intestine. These events are accomplished by the reabsorption of the acid into the cell cytoplasm. Inhibition of the release of acid by the cells of the stomach results in the secretion of gastric contents from the cells and the release of contents from the cells by means of the secretion of gastric contents from the cells. When used in the treatment of reflux esophagitis, the drug is a proton pump inhibitor. The proton pump inhibitor (PPI) is not indicated for use in children younger than 6 years. The use of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) has been associated with an increased incidence of gastric and esophageal ulcers. There are no data to suggest that esomeprazole should be taken with meals that contain sucrose or calcium, or in the presence of milk. Esomeprazole should be used with caution in patients who have liver dysfunction. The use of esomeprazole and sucrose in the treatment of reflux esophagitis should be avoided. The proton pump inhibitor (PPI) should be used with caution in patients with a history of peptic ulcer disease. |
